One of the greatest gifts that we have as we life is that of reflection. To be able to look back over our lives and see the things that happened realizing that every lesson is an opportunity to learn. In this collection we are taught some valuable lessons about growing up in the Latinx home. In Princess the narrator shares the joys of being the only girl in a house full of men, how hard it is and how special the outcome was. In Pinch of This we drift away to the special experience of learning the secret to connecting cooking to family and making it special for everyone no matter how old or young they are. And finally, in Daddy Daughter Dance we dance through the challenges of finally making it to high school and all of your siblings have graduated and gone away. Walking and maneuvering the hallways of school solo can be a challenge. But when she sees the advertisement for the daddy daughter dance she is excited. However, her papa reminds her of when he danced with her at her quinceañera and the mistakes that he made, he didn’t want that for her again. But as the time passes and her sadness is clear her parents decide to make the dance come to her ending with a beautiful and perfect dance.

    Growing up as a Latina

    Sounds like the heartbeat

    Of the most powerful waterfall

    Water doing its own thing

Hips shifting side to side like the salsa

Has slid under the water and taken control

Steering the water to rush not drip

    Move fast

    Never slow

That is the home of the Latinx family

    Sounds amazing doesn’t it

    Sounds like home…

    My home…

But I didn’t know on the other

Side of that beautiful running water

Was… a house full of men

    A father and brothers

    I’m too much everything

    I talk too much

I sing too loud in the shower

I talk on the phone too loud

    My friends are loud

“Eres una chica que siempre hace demasiado.”

Sure, I do too much and

I suppose I can be a lot but what part of

Growing up in a family so big it doesn’t even have a number

    Hundreds

    Thousands

    Millions – maybe

Quadruple Dupal Supal plus infinity add one.

That would take you from the centuries

    The Olmec from 1200 BCE
